MACE & SAGE
Mace and Sage are an inseparable pair looking for a loving and calm home. They have been with us since March 2022, where they were found in a cardboard box in the woods. They both have wonderful temperaments and are very curious with new people. Once trust is built, they will happily investigate you if you’re on their level, and patting the floor summons them both quite quickly. Both are foodies and will race to meet you for their daily meals (and perform a very entertaining manic dance in exchange for food). They appreciate an enclosed space to doze away the afternoon.. and their favourite toys are wicker, rattan and willow to chew on. Both Mace and Sage have been kept indoors during their time with us. Neither enjoy being handled or picked up.
Mace is an expert climber and loves to find new and interesting places to explore. He is very friendly and will often come and see you for nose strokes. We have been investigating Mace’s health issues and with approval from the vets, we are happy to give Mace a chance at adoption. His investigations are:
Collapsed right eye duct – Mace’s tear duct for his right eye has stopped working, meaning it cannot lubricate his eye properly. Sage often cleans this area for him, but eye drops can be administered daily to encourage lubrication of the eye when conditions are dry (e.g. summer). The right eye is visibly more closed than his left eye. From what we can tell, this doesn’t cause him pain or irritation. The area can get crusty and regular cleaning with cotton wool will ensure it’s free of debris.
Uncontrollable urination (and scalding of hind legs) – Mace sometimes has issues when urinating, where it can soak his hind legs. Previously, this has led to urine scalding for him, which was treated with pain relief/anti-inflammatory and a barrier cream and fortunately no longer happens. It is important to keep an eye on his hind legs and back end to make sure he is matt-free, clean and free from scalding or redness. Occasional bum baths and thorough grooming will be necessary.
Possible joint issues – it has been suggested to us that Mace may have joint issues which is why he urinates on himself. He has had a CT scan and it has shown no issues and he has absolutely no trouble running, climbing, jumping or balancing on his hind legs.
Sage is the biggest foodie and will happily grab her treat and race off to enjoy it somewhere privately. She is very mobile and very fast, so needs a good amount of space to sprint around to get all her energy out! Sage enjoys her own space and prefers not to be touched, although she will approach you if Mace is with her for moral support. She is devoted to Mace and will groom him regularly. Sage has been spayed and has no health conditions.
